When I was a kid,
I would BEG my mom to buy hot chocolate mix.
She always made her own,
and even when she’d add those cute little marshmallows,
or a big scoop of whipped cream,
I still longed for those little pouches.
Now, my kids are just the opposite.
They’ll drink the store bought cocoa,
but they much prefer homemade.
{I happen to agree…now}
With Thanksgiving in just a few days, we are really beginning to get in the spirit of things.
We are planning a week full of family movie nights, games, and ice skating.
Ice skating just HAS to have hot cocoa involved,
and today seemed like a great day to mix up a batch.
Whatever your plans are for this holiday week,
I hope you Enjoy!
Hot Cocoa Mix:
In a large bowl mix together
2 1/2 cups of powdered milk
2 cups of powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups of cocoa powder
and 1 tsp salt
this mix will keep a LONG time in the pantry.
fill your mug 1/2 full with the cocoa mix
and 1/2 hot water or hot milk
we decided to get a little festive with our cocoa today and added some peppermint whipped cream
{add 1/4 – 1/2 tsp pf peppermint extract to the cream as you are whipping}
and a peppermint cocoa stir
{found at my favorite place on earth Sur la Table}
equally delish would be to add some homemade marshmallows
the perfect treat for a cold and gloomy day:)

Mmmmm. This would be perfect today! It’s so dark already, I want to curl up under the covers.
nothing but movies for us tonight:)
The peppermint stick gives it that special touch!
I wasn’t expecting much – I actually bought them because they were super cute – but they add TONS of flavor to the cocoa
Yum! Looks good. I love making hot cocoa mix and giving it out at Christmas, I may have to try your version this year.
we’ve done cocoa for gifts – but I think this recipe is better than the one I used in the past – a bit creamier – and I definitely recommend the peppermint sticks:)
This looks SO yummy, Heather! Peppermint hot cocoa is one of my favorites yearround–I can’t get enough in the holiday season so I try to make it seasonless hehe.
same here – cocoa is always good! Have a great holiday weekend Hayley
Looks so yummy! I had no idea that hot cocoa mix has or should have powdered milk. Thanks for the idea to make my own.
the milk makes it a very creamy cup of cocoa! definitely worth making your own:)
